Prom's special - JKB Butler County Schools do something to help preserve the memory!

Butler County Students Making a Difference

The Butler County Coalition for Healty, Safe, and Drug-Free Communities as a part of the county-wide effort to promote a safe prom and graduation season for our local youth produced a lip dub video to Katy Perry's hit "Firework".  A lip dub is a trendy video shot without stopping the camera.  Collaborating with the locally based Little Chicago Productions group the video was shot on April 3, 2011 at Miami University Hamilton.  Local high school students representing the J. Kyle Braid Foundation were the stars of the video.  The students are featured lip syncing, dancing, tumbling, and holding signs encouraging their peers to have a game plan to stay safe.  There is also a reminder to parents that they have a lot to lose if they host prom and graduation parties and provide alcohol to minors.  Hamilton High School student Kristen Smallwood said, "It is important to show people that you can have fun without alcohol and other drugs".  J'aime Murray, Hamilton High Junior, was excited to be in the video and she said, "This is suppose to be an exciting time of the year. You don't want to come to school on Monday after prom or graduation and hear something bad happened to a friend, negative consequences from alcohol and other drugs abuse effects everyone". The video will air on You Tube April 6, 2011.

The students will post the lip dub to their Facebook accounts and start sharing it with their friends and family.  Karen Muray, Butler County Coalition Director - "We hope to spread the safe and drug free prom and graduation season message as far as we can through popular social media channels"

U-2s challenge pilots’ endurance in the air

SAN AIR BASE, South Korea

The following article was taken from starsandstipes.com and is about JKB alum and Airforce Captain Michael Opresko.

— The once-secret U-2 reconnaissance plane is known for its high-value role in some of the Cold War’s most critical events. It’s also known as the world’s toughest plane to pilot.

Capt. Michael Opresko, 29, knows first-hand how challenging it is to fly and land the U-2 Dragon Lady, and how punishing it can be on the body. U-2 pilots fly alone for eight to 12 hours, and so high they have to wear a space suit.

“Going up to 30,000 feet cabin pressure is like going from sea level to Everest each day,” said Opresko.

Wethersfield J. Kyle Braid members get ready to hang a banner promoting a golf ball drop to be held April 17 at the Kewanee Dunes to help send students from Henry County to the J. Kyle Braid Leadership Ranch in Colorado this summer.

Article from Star Courier

Ever wonder what it would be like to drop 1,200 golf balls out of a helicopter?
Come to the Kewanee Dunes on Saturday, April 17 at 10 a.m. and see for yourself.
The Henry County Chapter of the J. Kyle Braid Leadership Foundation is holding a fundraiser for the Henry County sophomores who will be attending the leadership ranch in Colorado this summer.
Twelve-hundred golf balls will be dropped from a helicopter piloted by Kewanee’s Dan Johnson over a hole in the driving range.

The “owner” of the first golf ball to land in the hole will win $1,000.
To purchase a golf ball “chance” for $10, call Wethersfield High School at 853-4205, or Kewanee High School at 853-3328. Chances are also available at Annawan, Cambridge, Geneseo, AlWood and Orion high schools.
Each high school sends two to four delegates to spend a week at the 160-acre ranch near Villa Grove, Colo., each summer.

The local chapters raise funds through events such as the recent dance and auction at Lavender Crest in Colona. The Rotary Club of Kewanee is a major sponsor of delegates from Kewanee and Wethersfield high schools.

Area Teen Named Nation's Top Prep Linebacker

A Lakota West senior has been named the nation's top high school linebacker.

Jordan Hicks is the second player to receive the Butkus Award for high school linebackers, following Manti Te'o from Punahou High School in Hawaii, who started for Notre Dame this fall as a true freshman linebacker.

The 6-foot-2, 220-pound Hicks is considered one of the top football players in Ohio at any position, and he's weighing offers from a number of Division I college programs.

Naperville Central JKB is Off and Running This Year.

The 15 JKB alumni have set forth ambitious goals.

They are going to Scott Elementary School, Highlands Elementary School, Madison and Lincoln Junior High Schools, running a freshman workshop, helping run the DVC leadership workshop, helping with various fundraising events, and selecting next year’s JKB alumni.

David A. Dreiser: Downers Grove North

Creativity, hard work pay off with full scholarship to University of Illinois

By Vikki Ortiz | Tribune reporter

May 3, 2009

Chicago Tribune 2009 All-State Academic Team member David Dresier of Downers Grove North High School has a 4.68 GPA, is number one in his class and is involved in many extra-curriculars including helping the homeless and running the the DGN track team. (Scott Strazzante, Chicago Tribune / April 22, 2009)

After struggling for days to find an essay topic for his All-State Academic scholarship application, David A. Dreiser decided on a tale in which his father's eyebrows come to life, pop off his face and spin into an alternative universe known as "the infinite forehead."

"I thought it was a little bit off the wall, but then I thought, 'That's David,' " said his father, Dan, whose eyebrows are really quite average.
